Crystal Pendulums: A Beginner’s Guide to Choosing, Cleansing and Using One

Everything we'd tell you about choosing, cleansing and using your first crystal pendulum, from picking the right stone to asking your very first question.

Crystal pendulums are probably the most asked-about thing that we sell at Fire and Fern. When I show people one, they let it dangle, watch it start to sway, and then look at us as if to say, “is it meant to do that?”

Yes. Yes it is.

If you’ve been eyeing one up but have no idea where to start, pull up a chair. This is everything I tell people when they ask, written down.

I remember holding my first ever pendulum. It was an amethyst, and I remember the awe as it changed direction when I asked it different questions. I kept my arm as still as possible, but it would still change direction.

So what actually is a pendulum?

It’s a weighted stone, usually cut to a point, hanging from a chain. You hold it still, ask a question, and read the answer in how it swings.

That’s really it. People have used pendulums for dowsing for centuries, hunting for water, lost rings, ley lines, you name it. These days crystal pendulum dowsing is more likely to happen at the kitchen table than in a field, but the idea hasn’t changed.

How does it work? Depends who you ask. Some believe spirit or higher guidance moves the pendulum. Others think it picks up the tiny movements your body makes when some part of you already knows the answer. We think both views are worth sitting with. Either way, it’s a lovely way to slow down and listen to yourself.

The different types of pendulum

There are more pendulum types than you’d expect. The ones you’ll see most often:

The classic faceted crystal point, in quartz, amethyst or rose quartz. If you’re not sure, start here.

Chakra pendulums, which have seven little stones stacked together, one for each chakra. Great if you do energy work.

Merkaba pendulums, cut into that star shape from sacred geometry. They look striking and spin well.

Brass and copper pendulums. The hollow ones are called witness pendulums because you can pop something small inside, like a lock of hair or a herb.

Wood and rough natural stone pendulums. Earthy and grounded, and a favourite with our hedge witch customers.

Honestly, don’t overthink it. Go with the one your hand keeps drifting back to.

Choosing Between Crystal Pendulums: Which Stone Is Best?

I get asked this all the time, and the answer is annoyingly simple: whichever one you’re drawn to. That said, each stone has its own traditional associations, so here’s a rough guide.

Clear quartz is the all-rounder. It’s traditionally linked with clarity and it takes on whatever intention you give it. A brilliant first pendulum.

Amethyst is the one we’d pick for divination. It’s long been tied to intuition and calm, and there’s something about the colour that makes you want to sit quietly with it.

Rose quartz is soft and loving. Good for heart questions, and for anyone who wants their practice to feel a bit gentler.

Citrine has become really popular lately, and we can see why. It’s associated with abundance, confidence and fresh starts, so people reach for it with questions about work and money.

Tiger’s eye is grounding and traditionally protective. Handy when you need to make a decision and stick to it.

Black obsidian and black tourmaline are for when you want to feel shielded while you work.

Labradorite and moonstone are for moon magic and anything a bit mysterious.

Still torn? Hold one in each hand and close your eyes for a minute. You’ll usually find one just feels right.

How to Cleanse Your Crystal Pendulums

When a new pendulum comes home, give it a cleanse before you use it. It’s been handled by miners, cutters, packers and probably us, so it deserves a fresh start. Some easy ways:

Waft it through incense or the smoke of a herb bundle. Rosemary and lavender work nicely.

Leave it on the windowsill overnight under a full moon.

Ring a bell or singing bowl over it.

Rest it on a piece of selenite overnight.

A quick rinse under the tap is fine for hard stones like quartz. Don’t do it with selenite, which dissolves, and make sure metal chains are properly dried so they don’t tarnish.

After that, cleanse it whenever it starts to feel heavy or a bit off, or after a reading that took a lot out of you.

How to use a crystal pendulum for beginners

This is the fun bit. It takes a little practice, so be patient with yourself.

Get comfortable. Sit at a table, rest your elbow on it and take a few breaths. Tense shoulders make for a wobbly pendulum.

Hold it still. Pinch the top of the chain between your thumb and first finger and let the stone hang a few inches down. Wait for it to settle.

Ask it to show you yes. Out loud or in your head, whichever feels natural. Watch what it does. Mine goes in a clockwise circle, yours might swing back and forth. Then ask it to show you no, and then “I don’t know”. Write them down, because you will forget.

Warm up with easy ones. Ask things you already know. “Is it Thursday?” “Is my dog called Biscuit?” It builds trust, and it’s quite funny when it gets one wrong.

Ask your real question. Keep it clear and make it a yes or no. “Should I apply for the new job?” works. “What’s going on with my career?” will just make it spin in confusion.

Say thank you. Then pop it back in its pouch.

One honest word of warning. If you’re desperate for a particular answer, the pendulum will probably give it to you. That’s not the pendulum lying, it’s you wanting it too much. Ask when you feel calm, and treat what it says as something to think about, not an order. It’s no substitute for good advice from a real person, either.

Pendulums and the chakras

A lot of people come in looking for chakra pendulums, and they’re a gorgeous tool for energy work. The usual method is to have someone lie down, then hold the pendulum a few inches above each chakra point, working up from the root to the crown. How it moves over each spot is read as a sign of how that energy centre is doing.

You can also use one over a chakra chart and simply ask which chakra needs some attention today. Light a candle, put some music on and make an evening of it.

Caring for Your Crystal Pendulums

Keep your pendulum in a soft pouch so the point doesn’t chip, and keep it away from perfume and cleaning sprays. Plenty of our customers keep theirs on the altar with their tarot deck, which feels right to us. They’re both ways of listening.

Questions we get asked a lot

What’s the best crystal pendulum for beginners?
Clear quartz or amethyst. Quartz because it’s so versatile, amethyst because of its long association with intuition.

Do I need to be psychic?
Not at all. You need patience and a willingness to feel a bit silly for the first few goes.

Mine won’t move. Is it broken?
It isn’t. Relax your hand, breathe out, and ask it to show you yes again. Some pendulums take a few sessions to wake up.

How often should I cleanse it?
When you first get it, then whenever it feels like it needs it. A lot of people just make it part of their full moon routine.

Come and find yours

We choose every pendulum in the shop by hand. Some are soft pink, some are sunny yellow, and a few are so dark you can see yourself in them. Have a browse, and if one catches your eye, that’s probably the one.
